Pedri and his good friend and fellow mage student Tomnas are graduating their studies, going in search of a master to take their learnings to a higher level.
Pedri is seeking out the Master of Lust, the Magus Dominic. Dominic is not impressed with Pedri and in fact taunts the would-be apprentice. When Pedri doesn’t flinch or back down from the tricks of the Magus, Dominic challenges Pedri to a game of seduction.
What follows is an interesting way of the student becoming the master becoming the student…rather like life imitating art imitating life. Both men are difficult to initially like as they as quite full of themselves. Eventually though, Pedri’s stubborness wins you over even if begrudgingly, and then his ultimate method of conquest shows he’s more than he ever let on. There are even reasons behind Dominic’s recalcitrant attitude.
In light of the whole story, the opening scene wasn’t all that important. Periods of passive writing slow the pacing, but when Dominic and Pedri finally have meaningful dialogue the story moves at a comfortable pace.
Be prepared to be slightly confused as to what era the story is set in. Early references lead one to believe this is a medival sort of paranormal magic story and then you are jarred into a contemporary setting with references to Yoda, clove cigarettes and cable television. Eventually, the real story of lust, love and power are revealed lifting this story just above average.
