Being stalked by her ex-lover, Tess Darcy is kidnapped and then injured in a horrible accident, one that kills Adrien Cole.  Recovering from her injuries, Tess moves to the small town of Kangaroo Creek hoping to put Adrien and the accident far from her mind.

In Kangaroo Creek odd things start to happen.  Tess is given over to wild bouts of imaginary sex with a man whose face she can’t see, a man who takes her to the brink of orgasm.  The sensations are so strong she doubts her sanity.  And then she meets Jared Pierce.

Jared Pierce is a Watcher.  Something is coming for Tess and he has to keep her from its evil grasp.  Protecting her from this vile entity is all the more difficult because Jared is falling in love with her and to touch her physically is to break the laws of Creation and damn him to eternal Hell.Lexxie Couper pens an intriguing tale of obsession and the age old war of good versus evil in Shadow Whispers.  The spirit of Adrien is as evil in death as he was in reality, Tess’s need for companionship and sex are palpable and Jared’s genuine longing for a woman he isn’t supposed to desire endearing.

This story is definitely not for everyone.  Several of the sex scenes are near rape and definitely forced and Ms. Couper’s descriptions of the dead, yet animated Adrien attempting to commit these acts are enough to turn a stomach.  For a tale that included what amounts to divine intervention there is a lot of out of place swearing.  Twice references are made to the Bible verse, “Jesus wept,” without there being a solid reason for that particular quote being used.

Beginning with mind games, and ranging from spiritual possession to the final culmination, sex is frequent.  If you like horror mixed with a twisted man’s idea of love combined with the love that can set a person free, you will probably enjoy Shadow Whispers.
