Every once in a while there is a story you purchase with high hopes of being something more. Gamenet: Into the Jaws of the Dragon by Michael Barnette was not that story.
The plot leaned heavily toward mediocre. Laredo, a bad ass who wants to kill the hero, Jason, sets a trap, using Jason’s wife as the bait. Disarming some of the Wasters’s tricks, Jason goes willingly toward the slaughter, Kimi at the forefront of his thoughts. Nasty gun battles ensue with lots of heads exploding leaving people “messily dead”.

Skylar Creighton is diagnosed with stage four cancer and told that she has a mere one to two months to live. She prepares herself to leave the world on her own terms. If the pain should grow too strong to bear, she has a gun to end her own suffering. Into a bag it is packed with other items to make a final trip. One of the things she takes is her favorite first edition book Crossing Oceans, Crossing Swords: The True Adventures of Captain Rand Edward Jamison. It is a pirate’s journal and through it she lost her heart to the writer some time ago.
As she is readying to leave her bookstore for the last time, a homeless man she knows stumbles in injured. His attacker is quick to follow, demanding the man’s piece of green rock. She feels the victim press the stone into her hand and suddenly finds herself in an old time ship’s cabin…of the captain whose exploits she has pored over so often and who has starred in her fantasies for so long.
When Rand discovers someone hiding in his personal cabin on the Red Sky, he is certain that it is an assassin sent by his enemy Captain Owain Cutler. It doesn’t take long however to discover that the person is a female and even more curiously reminds him of his late and deeply beloved wife Emma.
Ms Storey continues to please with her heartfelt and heated romances. In this time travel tale, we are given much excitement in battle between ships and in seduction in the bedroom…er, cabin. A magical sistrum is behind the bringing together of Skylar and Rand. Meanwhile, a dastardly villain of a half-brother is resolute in attempts to steal the item, triumph over his sibling, and bring the woman he insists he loves to his side. Hailey Meredith has all but given up in the search for her true love. The depth of her desperation to find him even has her trying a special brew from her Aunt Tabby. It is a concoction that is supposed to allow her soulmate to find her.
This magic drink, as well as, a beautiful Fabergé egg are instrumental in calling her elusive love of all time. When the man she longs for shows up in her life, she will realize that she has been looking for love in all the wrong places. After all, he’s not from around here.
Prince Tynan is from the Faerie realm. His own search for his perfect mate has led to naught. With permission from the Queen, he ventures forth from the Faerie Court to continue in his hunt. His senses take him to Devon Falls, and a bit of motherly interference has him haunted with the music of love that leads right to his heart’s desire.
This is the nicely spicy second book in Raine Delight’s Holiday Series and the reviewer’s introduction to the author’s writing. One must say that there is a good basic plot to Charmed Magic and the scenes between hero and heroine are sensuous enough to keep one turning the pages, so to speak.
The difficulty lies with dialogue that didn’t have a natural feel to it and a lack of depth in both the characters and the story itself. A longer book would have allowed for more detail to flesh out Hailey and Tynan. It would also likely have permitted a more creditable build up to the story and explanations for how a Fabergé egg could be purchased in a small town by someone who is not portrayed as wealthy.
Ms Delight could have benefited from an editor who used her red pen more liberally. All the same, the underlying talent in writing erotic romance is visible and one hopes that the future works offered will have more substance and polish.

Across a Crowded Room by Tom Knutson and Cara Preston is a slightly different take on romantic poetry. Together they form a him and her stimulus/response/action/reaction sort of flow to a variety of topics of interest to new lovers.
This ying and yang flow gives a nice balance of his and her perspectives. My favorite of the bunch had to be I wish I looked like that where the author, probably Mr. Knutson, reminded the woman on his arm that he didn’t need her to look like a child trying to look like an adult. At times, the meter is a bit simplistic, and if you are looking for poetry with heavy rhyming schemes, you won’t find it here. Rather, this reads more like a stream of consciousness recollection of searching for love, getting over those awkward beginnings and finding the person you want to be with.
If you enjoy poetry, especially of a romantic bent, you will probably find a poem or two to tickle your fancy in Across a Crowded Room .

Caitlyn has left America after the end of a disasterous relationship. Armed with faith and good-will, she takes a position at a book store located within Hogarth castle. Working as a clerk, she meets Adrian, the castle’s ghost.
One evening as they work recording the store’s inventory, she hears his tale of how he was cursed to live in the castle eternally as a ghost. The next day, she uncovers an important book, one that has the reversal for the enchantment Adrian has been living under.
Sara Freeze’s glimpse into the life of an honorable, imprisoned ghost is a tiny nugget of delight. She allows the reader to see how two “people” can desire one another, build a friendship, and understand the sacrifices required should they find a way to be together. This story was a charming pairing of contemporary and Regency genres that should bring a smile to your lips.

Chloe Bridges is delayed in Okinawa due to a terrorist attack in Japan. When inspectors search her luggage they find several vials and sound the alert, detaining Chloe as a potential terrorist. No matter how hard she tries, the fear as well as the language barrier keep her captors from understanding the vials contain vital stem cells for research she is going to do in Tokyo.
Staff Sgt Zack Niermeyer, USMC, enters Chloe’s interrogation room. He’s all business and discipline, not prone to the temptations a sulty southern accent can create. Once Chloe’s identity and purpose for traveling to Japan are cleared up, he decides to be implusive and capitalize on the chemistry the two of them are experiencing with one another.
This might be a satisfying ending, but Ms. Merlin doesn’t stop. She develops a relationship between Chloe and Zack that is hot, hot, hot. Zack takes a week of leave and the two of them plan to shuttle back and forth between Japan and Okinawa. On one such trip, Zack is seriously injured, condemned to a life on a respirator. Only an experimental stem cell transplate will give him any hope of normalcy. But as is so often the case of fiction, things don’t quite go the way our hero and heroine plan.

Sam Reed is a cult intervention specialist doing his job when he sneaks into the nomadic Star Mother cult’s camp in search of Jake and Kelly Bancroft. He and his coyote helper, Cody, have successfully handled many such situations though he has a more personal aversion and drive regarding this particular group. After all, his mother had joined them bringing him with her since he had only been a child. He left on his own at age 16 instead of going through the right of passage that had been planned. By then he was fully conscious that the bizarre beliefs were delusions and that the cruelty and mind control could not be excused.
A carefully worded letter from Jake to his sister spoke of suicide. Though they are from a dysfunctional family that was headed by an abusive parent, the sibling bond of love was strong. Kelly arrived at the site determined to save her brother by removing him from the group and taking him home with her. Her attempt was cut short when she was virtually kidnapped out of the trailer in which she had been waiting to meet with her brother. The handsome man insisted he was saving her.
The married co-leaders of the cult, Valya and Von, and their followers have been awaiting Anston’s comet which will signal the presence of the starship that they believe to be coming to bring them back to their home planet, Atria. But only their Essence will be able to travel in this way so all of them will have to be free of their bodies when the time comes—and it is coming soon.
Brainwashing, threat of mass suicide, cult leaders drunk on power, attempted rescue, and in the midst of it all, a very real romance.
This is a very well-crafted read. It has been quite some time since I came across such engaging characters, such an unusual and exciting storyline, and such clean writing. The pacing flows nicely without any dragging areas and the details bring the whole situation to life before our eyes. Even the secondary characters and villains are portrayed in a wonderfully multi-faceted way.
The suspense is exquisitely developed but the love story between the wonderful hero and heroine absolutely shines. Both Sam and Kelly have personal issues to work through and the way that they manage to do it while also helping each other really underlines the partnership between them. There are twists and turns to this tale that will keep you on your toes, but are plausible enough that they fit perfectly into all of the action.
Readers will definitely want to make time to settle in for the duration of Desert Guardian.
