Louisiana Hot Sauce by Mickie Sherwood

Excerpt: PG13
Burped, fed, and ready to play, Mya was placed on a pallet spread out on the floor. Mesha sat cross-legged before her, the laptop screen staring at her like a big-eyed specter waiting to steal her thoughts. Writer’s block seemed an inevitable outcome to the looming deadline for her latest manuscript. Too many distractions pulled her in too many directions. Her lids fluttered rapidly as her eyes magnetized to the cursor’s hypnotizing blink. Her descent into oblivion, merely a few seconds in length, was substantial enough to jerk her awake in such a terrorized state she launched upwards and rocketed outside.

“Jack!” Her terrified shriek rent the air as she bolted blindly, thinking she had left her dog out too long. “Jack!”

“Sonofabitch!” a man’s voice thundered as tools thudded to the ground at his feet.

The man repairing the helicopter missed his intended mark, stabbing the screwdriver into the fleshy part of his palm when he heard the panicked screams. Gushing blood required him to apply pressure to the area with the work rag as he bent his tall body to clear the undercarriage of the craft. The person he witnessed lurching towards him resembled a wild woman—one who teetered on the edge of sanity—as she zipped through the open field, thick hair flying every which way, evidently unaware of his presence.

“What?” he yelled while sprinting in her direction. Suddenly, he saw her cut away and make a beeline for the house.

He gave chase.

Mesha looked over her shoulder at the goateed and mustached man gaining on her, his forehead furrowed with more rows than her square foot garden—an admonition to beware. Studying the direction he came from spurred her to deduce the mechanic that was due days ago was finally on the job. But, as for his intent as he bounded after her? Her heart pounded loud enough to rupture her eardrums. Her refuge seemed to get farther away the harder she pushed. She tamed her hair for another quick glance that settled a foreboding in the pit of her stomach, for she realized he was swifter than she. That truth bore out as his long legs galloped in the hunt and a vise squeezed her upper arm, goading her to fight for her life.

“Stop hitting me!” he commanded, flinging the arm out that held her captive, the move dangling her about like a rag-doll. His eyes jumped from her to the weathered clapboard house in the distance where the burst of red foliage attracted him.

Mesha saw his distraction as her chance.

She wanted her freedom. Nothing else would do. So she attacked with all she had: kicking, biting, punching, scratching, stomping. In other words—street fighting. All of her efforts were for naught since his arm snaked around her body, constricting her intake of breath. The more she struggled, the tighter he compressed. Her feeble attempts to extricate herself turned her thoughts to Mya—all alone.

“The baby’s in the house,” she whimpered, cursing the fragility in her tone.

“I’m not going to hurt you, lady,” he stormed. “Just stop mauling me.”

“O-o-kay,” she heaved, unable to control the panting while bent over the crook of his arm, her body gouged into his.

“I’m going to release you to turn around. Can you do that without a fight?” he questioned and received her positive headshake. He did as committed. “Turn around.”

She turned all right and took off again, zigzagging across the field to throw him off.

Nicked Hearts by Mickie Sherwood

Excerpt: PG13
The message light on the telephone blinked red immediately upon her entering the living room. K.C. left the double doors open, latched the screen and continued to her bedroom. The glass door in there followed suit as she allowed the sea breeze to permeate the villa. She tried to resist but the lure was too much. The look at Nick’s villa consumed her until the phone rang causing her heart to pound. It was very unlikely her father was privy to her whereabouts. She had been very meticulous about everything she did since leaving Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The treble ring continued mushrooming in the quiet.

Cautious steps put her within reach of the receiver which she quietly lifted to listen without saying a word.

“K.C.?” She heard Nick’s voice. “K.C., are you okay?” This time something else hammered each syllable.

“Hi, Nick Hart.”

“Hi, yourself.”

She liked that familiar greeting. “How did things go today?” K.C. took the lead on the conversation.

“It was a very productive day. And yours?”

“I had a wonderful day, Nick. Would you believe I went parasailing…and snorkeling?”

The pride in her voice was hard to miss. The shock was obvious in his as he bellowed, “Parasailing!” Of course, he knew about snorkeling. His disturbed articulation went unnoticed in her world.

“You should’ve seen me hang loose, drifting like I didn’t have a care in the world.”

“I’m glad I didn’t.” It was out of his mouth like a shot. “I mean—”

“Explain that, Nick Hart.” K.C. paced to the door in agitation. He was already on his lanai watching her advance.

“I’m coming over.” He struck out across the green grass seconds after spitting out the words and slinging the receiver to a chair.

She hung up to wait on him so she could put him in his place. The itchy sandy discomfort had her twitching as he stomped up, impounded her body—no less—and placed one heck of a kiss on her color tinted lips. “What was that for?” she asked, not sure whether to be flattered or furious.

“I missed you today.”

His admission took the wind out of her red sails. She gazed affectionately at the black haired man whose nickname could have been Doctor Feelgood for he certainly made her feel that way. “That’s nice.” The response sounded lame to her ears.

At least she hadn’t slapped him and sent him on his way. “Got plans for tonight?”

“Why?”

“How about honoring me with your presence at the luau?”

“Okay,” she said sweetly as if just hearing about the function. “As you can see, I’m a mess.”

“If that’s the case, K.C., you’re the prettiest mess I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

She laughed. He flushed. “Nick, you’re blushing.” K.C. stepped out of her comfort zone with her next move. Standing on ballerina toes and using her finger and thumb to pull his chin down gave her added height to smooch his cheek. “Give me a couple of hours, okay?” She needed a few minutes of down time.

Nick bravely went a step further and brushed their lips together. “Take all the time you need. Just call when you’re ready.”

Again, K.C. relinquished a little of her control to enjoy the fleeting moment of wishful thinking. She backed off, her tongue tasting the residue of him as he strode back to his villa minus another word. He was the diversion she needed at that moment—one that promised to take her to lofty heights. A pleased grin spun her on her heels and she wandered inside.

A Soldier’s Vow by Jackie M. Smith

Prologue
Valise in hand, Winnie stood breathless as she gazed at the majestic ship floating with so much grace against the afternoon late November sky. She stepped forward and her heart raced in her chest. After spending the last two years in Europe, she headed home. Taking a deep breath of the cool salty air, she calmed herself. “You can do this,” she whispered.
Fixing her wide brim hat, she climbed the thick wooden walkway, feeling her feet heavy with every step. She let her eyes glance down. The high distance from where she stepped and the water below made her nauseous and very light-headed. Taking another deep breath, she continued her way while touching her growing belly and feeling the baby’s movements within.
“Winnie!” A man’s voice far behind her called out her name.
Looking out into the crowd behind her, she searched for the caller but saw no one. She shook her head and continued her way up.
“Winifred Douglas!” The man’s voice called out again.

She stopped once more and looked below. For a quick moment, she swore hearing her darling Henry calling out to her. Could it be he travelled all this way to Liverpool in order to find her? Her heart raced. Her palms moistened inside her gloves. Walking a few steps back down the gangplank, Winnie bumped into people going up. She squeezed her eyes closed as people jostled their way past her. Stopping where she stood, Winnie looked everywhere for Henry’s handsome face. Unshed tears stung her eyes. She imagined hearing him and seeing him. She felt dizzy. Taking a deep breath, she walked the rest of the way down the gangplank, and waited once last moment for the familiar baritone to call out her name.
